Beginner Guitar Practice Routine

A beginner practice routine should be short enough that you will actually repeat it. Choose the version that fits the time you have today rather than waiting for a perfect long session.

10 minutes

1 min tune
3 min chord changes
3 min strumming
3 min play a progression or song section

20 minutes

2 min tune/warm up
5 min chords
5 min rhythm
3 min new skill
5 min music

30 minutes

3 min tune/warm up
8 min chords
7 min rhythm
5 min new skill
7 min music

What to practice first

If you are still working through the beginner roadmap, spend most of your technical time on two things: clean chord changes and steady strumming. Those two skills make simple music sound much better.

Keep one thing measurable

Choose one small marker: clean G-to-C changes in one minute, the slowest metronome speed where a pattern stays steady, or how many times you can play a progression without stopping. Track one marker, not ten.

Do not turn practice into only drills

Every session should include a few minutes of actual music. That might mean playing a chord progression, a short riff you already know, or a song section that uses the skills you are learning.

Missed a day? Continue with the next session. There is no need to “make up” practice by doing an extra-long session.

Keep going

When this feels comfortable, return to the Beginner Guitar Roadmap and move to the next step.
